Sunlight can be as healthy for pets as it can for humans, and we all know what soaking in the sun can do for us, and how good it makes us feel. It is essential in producing vitamin D, which protects the skin, controls calcium levels, stimulates blood circulation, and helps stabilize metabolism. Just 5-15 minutes of sun, three times a week during the summer months is enough to keep your vitamin D levels high.
However, be aware that too much ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause sunburn, and solar dermatitis in dogs and cats. Certain breeds of cats and dogs are often susceptible to sunburn due to their white or short-haired pale coats. They often burn the bridge of their nose, the tips of their ears, or their belly when lying down absorbing the rays. It is important to protect your pet from too much UV exposure by limiting their time outdoors, finding them a shady spot to lie, and ensuring they have fresh drinking water to prevent hydration.
There's even more you can do to protect your pet from the hot summer sun. There are various types of pet sunscreen available on the market and even sun goggles to help protect their eyes from the rays of the sun so you can keep them feeling good, and looking good too!
