Responsible Pet Parenting Tips - Tip 4

Tip #4 - Socialize Your Pet

This doesn’t mean we’re suggesting your dog or cat throws a holiday mixer for the other animals on the block. We are suggesting however, that they get the proper training and learn techniques to adapt to others in our society. This can involve anything from taking your pet to a dog park and learning to hang out with the other pups or, simply teaching your cat to stop clawing Auntie Edna’s wool scarf.

Its important your pets know right from wrong and that there is proper discipline when they are doing something they shouldn’t. Letting them misbehave or act in an unacceptable manner is not considered the most responsible and you may notice others giving you looks or advice when your furry friend starts to act out.

Teaching right from the beginning (when your pet is still a puppy or kitten, or when you first adopt them) is key. This will lead to living with a friendly pet and ultimately a less stressful life.

Tip #3 - A Healthy Pet = A Happy One

Taking your pet for annual checkups and visiting your veterinarian when something seems wrong with your pet is extremely important. Just like with our own check ups, these visits can help prevent or identify early on any chronic illness or disease and ensure your pet stays healthy and ultimately living a happy life.

Veterinarians also keep track of things like your pet’s weight and suggest appropriate pet food if necessary. Or, they can tell you things like if your pet needs their teeth cleaned or are having problems with their teeth and/or gums.

The health and happiness of your pet is ultimately linked with your own. Your happy pet will also put you in a positive mood because the love and affection you show them will be given right back to you, unconditionally.

5 Responsible Pet Parenting Tips - Tip 2

Tip #2 - Live in a Pet Friendly Environment

There are many aspects that make up a pet-friendly atmosphere. First, a pet should have a large enough living space and, if you own a dog, they should also have some sort of grass space to play on. Different pets have different needs, but it’s not fair for a large breed dog such as a Golden Retriever or a Siberian Husky, to be cooped up all day in a 600 sq. foot apartment. On the other hand, your cat will curl up on your window sill, sleeping peacefully in the sun, loving every minute of it.

Keep in mind just like with kids, you should always store harmful household cleaners, antifreezes and toxic household plants away and out of reach from your four-legged friends.

5 Responsible Pet Parenting Tips - Tip 1

The Canadian Kennel Club is putting on their second annual RDOG Day this coming Saturday, September 26. RDOG (Responsible Dog Ownership Day) is meant to bring together dog owners across Canada for walks, talks and informational sessions. RDOG Day’s goal is to promote, educate and enlighten dog owners and the general public about the benefits responsible dog ownership brings to our neighbourhoods, and the importance of pets in our society.

In honour of RDOG Day we are dedicating this week’s blog posts to the importance of responsible pet ownership and our recommendation for the top 5 ways to be a responsible pet parent.

And without further adieu, our tip #1 is…

Tip #1 - Equip Your Pet with ID

Our first tip may seem like a no brainer to some; but, it’s extremely important regardless. Ensure your furry loved one has ID on them. This doesn’t mean that they need to carry around a photo ID card strapped to their collar, but we do suggest that your pets have a collar. Their collars should also be equipped with a dog or cat tag that states their name and preferably your phone number. Just in case they accidentally get out and get lost, someone may find them and give that number a call.

It’s also a good idea to get your pet a microchip and/or tattoo. If you adopt your pet from a local animal shelter the microchip and tattooing is usually included in the price. Check with your local pet store to see if there is an additional charge on their pets, as each store may be a bit different. Another great way to keep all your pet’s information in one central area is to register with PetLynx. PetLynx is an online database for pets & people. By registering your contact and pet information and by keeping it current, you are providing service providers and emergency personnel with the resources needed to keep your pet safe, healthy, & comfortable. Or as we like to say, your pet will be…All taken care of.

Pet Health Insurance Month is Heating Up!

In my last post, I told you about Petsecure celebrating September as Pet Health Insurance Month, and how the goal behind this event is to increase awareness of pet insurance as part of responsible pet parenting. On top of educating Canadian pet owners about the importance of pet insurance, we are also running a pretty sweet contest with a grand prize worth over $4,000! The great thing about celebrating Pet Health Insurance Month is that we encourage others in the industry to get involved and start their own initiatives, which is exactly what NAPHIA did! NAPHIA (North American Pet Health Insurance Association) has created two of their own contests to promote Pet Health Insurance Month.
