The first cat H1N1 virus has been confirmed. A 13 year-old cat in Iowa had developed signs of respiratory infection after several of the people in the house were ill. Test results were confirmed positive for the H1N1 virus on November 2, 2009.
This is the first report of a cat being infected. To date, there is no evidence of any dogs getting the virus or that the cat can pass the virus on to any people.
What can you do to protect your pet?
Just like with all other forms of the flu, you can keep your pet healthy by washing your hands, covering coughs and sneezes and minimizing contact with your pet while you have flu-like symptoms. If you pet does develop any signs of respiratory problems, it’s important to see your veterinarian right away.
